As mentioned in our D.U.M.Bs in Dulce: The Ballad of Phil Schneider episode.

Derinkuyu is the deepest known underground settlement in the world. Discovered in the Cappadocia region in central Anatolia, Turkey in 1963 it was expanded by many civilizations to its current size of being able to house over 20,000 people and enough food stores, livestock, tools and weaponry to fully sustain that compliment of inhabitants for years. It is also complete with its own ventilation system and fully function fresh water well network.

The incredibly intricate tunnels

The origins of the site are hotly debated with some believing it was the Hitites who started the underground settlement over 3,500 years ago and used the maze of catacombs as both housing (when under attack or faced with inclement environmental conditions) and purely as storage facilities between 1,600 and 1,300 BC. Others researchers believe the site was first built by the Phrygians, under the rule of King Midas, between 700 and 600 BC.

The under and above ground view

What is known is that the site was expanded and elaborated by future inhabitants before its eventual abandonment causing it to be forgotten in the annals of recorded history. That is until 1963 when excavation of the site began. The current archaeological search has descended over 8 levels but it’s believed the structure may descend to 18 stories deep.

One of the many wells sunk deep into the Earth

We mentioned the site as part of the overall conspiracy theory of Underground Military Bases rumoured to hold everything from secret Military experiments, New World Order Headquarters to UFOs and Alien colonies. The site is also hotly mentioned in conjunction with the other huge conspiracy theory surrounding forgotten knowledge and lost advanced civilizations of man. Sites like Derinkuyu, Göbekli Tepe (also in Turkey) Yonaguni in Japan and of course The Giza Plateau and numerous other ancient Pyramid sites are considered tangible evidence of a level of advancement and understanding that modern accepted history says never existed.

Here’s Sometimes Interesting’s full breakdown on the Derinkuyu site and below is a video detailing the incredible catacomb network and their uses.

Let us know what you think of the theory of Deep Underground Military Bases, given the Derinkuyu site it seems a formality that modern base structures housing 20,000+ would exist, but are they home to Extra Terrestrial Lifeforms?
